The Raphael First Merlot is a standout example of why the North Fork is often called the "Bordeaux of Long Island." It’s an estate-grown red that leans into the grape’s softer side, avoiding the heavy, jammy style you might find elsewhere. Instead, this Merlot is all about balance, combining the bright acidity of a maritime climate with the structural depth that comes from careful aging in French oak.

When you get it in the glass, the first thing you’ll notice is an aromatic mix of ripe red cherry, plum, and a subtle earthiness that’s classic for this region. There’s a nice thread of toasted vanilla and cedar running through it, but it doesn't bowl over the fruit. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and genuinely smooth, with the kind of velvety tannins that make Merlot so easy to drink.

This is a great "middle-of-the-road" red that works with a huge range of food. It has enough backbone to handle roasted chicken or herb-crusted pork, but it’s elegant enough that it won't overwhelm a classic Margherita pizza or a mushroom risotto. If you’re putting together a cheese board, try it with some mild Gouda or a creamy Camembert.
